What Is A VOC?Updated 5 months ago

VOC stands for Volatile Organic Compound. VOCs are a group of organic chemicals that have a high vapour pressure at room temperature, meaning they can easily evaporate into the air. These compounds are released into the atmosphere during the drying and curing process of paint. VOCs are found in a wide range of paint products, including oil-based and water-based paints, as well as other coatings like varnishes and stains.

VOCs in paint serve various functions, such as acting as solvents, thinning agents, and binders. They help maintain the paint's consistency and aid in its application. However, VOC emissions from paint can contribute to indoor and outdoor air pollution and have potential health and environmental concerns.

To address these concerns, many countries and regions have established regulations and standards that limit the allowable VOC content in paints and coatings. Low-VOC and zero-VOC paints have been developed to meet these regulations, reducing the emission of harmful VOCs into the air. These paints are often considered more environmentally friendly and healthier options for indoor and outdoor painting projects, as they contribute less to air pollution and pose fewer health risks to occupants.
